The grandson of football legend John Madden has landed a job with an NFL team following a stint at Michigan.
Madden, the icon behind the name of the popular EA Sports video game, was a longtime coach in the league before going on to ace broadcasting. And it appears his grandson is looking to follow in his footsteps, as the Washington Commanders announced on Tuesday that Jesse Madden is joining their coaching staff.
Jesse, who played for the Wolverines before working with the college football program, is now set for an NFL experience because he will be in the thick of things when the NFC side looks to improve on their impressive 2024 season next term.
The former defensive back was part of the National Title-winning team under Jim Harbaugh in 2023.
“Jesse Madden, the grandson of Pro Football Hall of Famer John Madden, will enter his first season in the NFL after graduating from the University of Michigan,” the Commanders announced via their official website. “At Michigan, Madden played quarterback in his freshman season before switching to defensive back. Madden was a member of the 2024 national championship team at Michigan.”
Jesse, who has been hired as an offensive quality control coach, is likely keen on earning a head coaching role one day, which would have made his grandfather proud had he still been alive on the back of his legendary career.
John Madden was the head coach of the Oakland Raiders from 1969 to 1978 and guided the team to a Super Bowl win, having previously coached at San Diego State and Hancock.
Madden went 103-32-7 as the Raiders HC and had an unbelievable 10-year run as a custodian in the NFL. He later switched to broadcasting and became one of the most revered analysts on the air.
The former coach and commentator died in 2021 at the age of 85 and remains the face of the NFL’s flagship video game.
It wouldn’t surprise us if fans keep a close watch of his grandson’s career in the NFL following today’s announcement.
