The San Francisco 49ers’ first injury report comes out later on Wednesday afternoon. During Monday’s bonus practice, there was no sign of starting quarterback Brock Purdy. According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, it’s unlikely that Purdy plays in Week 6 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers:
Neither Ravens QB Lamar Jackson (hamstring) nor 49ers QB Brock Purdy (toe) have been ruled out for their respective teams’ Week 6 games, and Jackson in particular has been lobbying to get back on the field before it gets too late for the 1-4 Ravens. But after checking in on both of those situations early in the week, I’d be surprised if either plays in Week 6. Baltimore is off in Week 7 and could seize the opportunity to give Jackson another couple of weeks to heal. The Niners brought Purdy back from the injury in Week 4 and he had a setback, so they’ll likely be more cautious this time, especially with backup Mac Jones playing so well.
Purdy’s initial diagnosis after his Week 1 injury was that he’d miss anywhere from two to five weeks. After Purdy’s recent setback, San Francisco is likely to wait closer to five than two weeks. They have not placed Purdy on the Injured Reserve yet. That suggests Purdy’s injury is more week-to-week.
Tampa Bay is one of the few teams with as many injuries as the 49ers. In that same report, Graziano said the Buccaneers will be without running back Bucky Irving this week as he deals with foot and shoulder injuries. Wide receiver Mike Evans remains “week-to-week” with a hamstring injury. Evans has not played since Week 3.
Additionally, the Bucs’ starting cornerback, Zyon McCollum, was spotted at Wednesday’s practice in a sling. Tampa Bay was without starting cornerback Jamel Dean and his backup Benjamin Morrison this past Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks. Sam Darnold took full advantage.
If Tampa Bay is without McCollum, it forces rookie Jacob Parrish to play on the outside, rather than in the slot. Seattle targeted the rookie seven times. He allowed 83 yards. It could be Parrish and another backup this week for Mac Jones.
We’ll find out more about the 49ers’ wide receiver injuries later on Wednesday. Getting Jauan Jennings and potentially Ricky Pearsall back would be a significant boost for a passing attack that looks to pick up where they left off after Week 5.
