Report: Giants' 'preferred path' is drafting a QB at No. 3 overall

It’s no secret that the New York Giants will spend the entirety of their offseason looking to not only upgrade the quarterback position but to find their long-term franchise answer.

The door has been left open to free agent signings and a potential trade but ideally, general manager Joe Schoen will land on a long-term answer in the 2025 NFL draft.

Even if the Giants were to acquire a veteran — say, Matthew StaffordPaul Schwartz of the New York Post reports that their “preferred path” is selecting a quarterback at No. 3 overall.

The preferred path to follow remains in place: Select a quarterback with the No. 3 pick in the draft. That is what the Giants hope will happen. When it comes to identifying and securing a franchise-saving player, though, hope is not a good thing, maybe the worst of things — with apologies to Andy Dufresne.

The Giants can hope all they want, but simple arithmetic leads to the sobering reality that Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders could both be off the board by the time the Giants are on the clock. And there might not be anything they can do about that. This means a different path must be explored. There should be no discounting the Giants and Matthew Stafford as a potential arranged marriage.

The issue plaguing the Giants is that they can’t predict the future. If they desire to select a quarterback third overall as opposed to trading up, they must add insurance before the draft. That’s where Stafford comes into play.

The only alternative to guarantee their optimal outcome would be to trade up with either the Tennessee Titans or Cleveland Browns but as Schwartz notes, that’s not the “preferred path.”

Maybe the Giants luck out and either Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders are available when they’re put on the clock. But maybe they don’t.

Although it may not be the “preferred path,” trading for Stafford and landing an impact player like Abdul Carter or Travis Hunter would be a solid consolation prize.
