Someone always gets left out in the end. Right now, that someone might be Dorian Thompson-Robinson. The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback room is looking like a packed elevator.
Jalen Hurts isn’t going anywhere. Tanner McKee has climbed to the QB2 spot. Kyle McCord, the rookie from Syracuse, is flashing just enough to draw attention. And that leaves Thompson-Robinson, once a promising prospect, wondering if there’s still a seat for him in Philly.
The* Sporting News* dropped the hammer this week, predicting that the Eagles will cut ties with Thompson-Robinson before the regular season starts.
“That leaves DTR, who was acquired in the Kenny Pickett trade this past spring, as the odd man out,” they wrote. It’s blunt. But also, it’s not surprising.
Philadelphia didn’t just draft Kyle McCord for fun. They used draft capital to get him, and according to Eagles Wire’s Geoffrey A. Knox, that decision all but sealed DTR’s fate. “McCord hasn’t technically won the job yet,” Knox wrote last month, “but then again, Philadelphia invested draft capital. That says a lot.”
So far, McCord has made the most of his limited chances, taking reps in minicamp and showing some flash. That’s not great news for Thompson-Robinson, who struggled heavily during his time with the Cleveland Browns. The numbers speak loudly: 440 yards, six interceptions, zero touchdowns, and a 51.7% completion rate. Tough to sell that in a league with a short memory.
To his credit, DTR owned up to his mistakes last year. “I’m not a rookie no more, so I can’t use that as an excuse,” he said, per Browns Zone. “I got to go out there and be able to execute… don’t make a bad play worse.”
He knows he’s got work to do. But the clock is ticking.
Thompson-Robinson has shown glimpses of upside, especially in preseason action. But upside doesn’t win roster spots, production does. And if the current depth chart holds, his next chance may have to come somewhere else.
The NFL doesn’t wait around. And in Philly, the quarterback shuffle may be one step closer to pushing Thompson-Robinson out the door.
