Report: Detroit Lions signing nickel corner to practice squad

The Detroit Lions are continuing to try to fortify their secondary depth in the wake of several injuries. According to NFL Network reporter Cameron Wolfe, the Lions are signing veteran cornerback Arthur Maulet to their practice squad.

Maulet, 32, has been in the NFL for eight seasons after going undrafted in 2017. He initially spent most of his first two seasons alongside Dan Campbell with the New Orleans Saints, making seven game appearances, exclusively on special teams. From there, however, his career burgeoned. In two years (2019-20) with the New York Jets, Maulet played in 23 games and made 11 starts. Over that span, he had seven pass deflections, two interceptions, 67 tackles and a fumble recovery. He would go on to play two seasons with the Steelers (33 games, eight starts) and two with the Baltimore Ravens (17 games, three starts). This offseason, he was with the Houston Texans, but he failed to make the team’s final cuts.

For most of his career, Maulet has been a nickel cornerback. At 5-foot-10, 190 pounds, that makes sense. And, unsurprisingly, a strength of his game is his ability to be a force in the run game.

Detroit needs all the help they can get with their cornerback depth at the moment. While the current expectation is to get both starting cornerback D.J. Reed and Terrion Arnold back in a few weeks, they are without both—and Khalil Dorsey—for the time being. On their 53-man roster, the only healthy cornerbacks are Amik Robertson, Rock Ya-Sin, and Avonte Maddox. Maulet will join depth options Erick Hallett, Trey Flowers, and Nick Whiteside.
