Report: Colts QB Anthony Richardson receives encouraging news on injured pinky

According to NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson’s x-rays on his injured right pinky came back ‘clean,’ and he’s expected to be right back on the training camp practice field:

After failing to pick up Baltimore Ravens pass rushing edge David Ojabo near midway through the first quarter, Richardson suffered a big hit, injuring his right pinky in the process. He did not return to the game.

That being said, Richardson could be seen gripping the football and throwing from along the sidelines, and even attempted to go back into the game following the injury, but was rebuked by the Colts coaching staff.

He prematurely finished his evening, completing 2 of 3 pass attempts for 21 total passing yards and no rushing carries. In his absence, fellow QB1 competitor Daniel Jones saw extended action within the first half.

Colts head coach Shane Steichen already indicated that this could impact the team’s playing time allocation between both Richardson and Jones for their Week 2 preseason game, hosting the Green Bay Packers, since Jones just saw more game day snaps than initially planned.

Whether that means Richardson starts instead or just receives more reps than he otherwise would’ve had, if he hadn’t been forced to leave the preseason opener, and we’ll see. Entering Thursday night, Richardson had been in the driver’s seat throughout training camp for the starting quarterback job, but his continued availability remains a key concern—having already suffered a number of injuries in his early pro career.
