The Colts have a formal meeting with the NFL Draft’s consensus top running back prospect, but let’s not read too much into it yet.

According to The Draft Network’s Ryan Fowler, the Indianapolis Colts are among the league teams that have a formal meeting scheduled with Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty:

If nothing else, the Colts’ potential interest in Jeanty is interesting, given that the team already has one of the NFL’s top running backs, star workhorse Jonathan Taylor—who’s coming off another very productive season for Indianapolis.

While Indianapolis could certainly boost its backfield depth behind Taylor—particularly as it relates to a pass catching/blocking back upgrade, Jeanty is regarded as the consensus top running back in this year’s class and is projected to go well within the top half of the first round.

The 5’9,” 215 pound junior back for the Broncos rushed for a whopping 2,601 total rushing yards on 374 carries (7.0 ypc. avg) and 29 rushing touchdowns during 14 starts this past season—earning unanimous All-American, Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year, First-Team All-Mountain West, as well as the Maxwell Award and Doak Walker Award.

This should be more about the Colts simply performing their due diligence on a top prospect—regardless of position, rather than an indication that they are looking to select Jeanty with the 14th overall pick or make a shocking change at starting running back.

The Colts will formally meet with a lot of top prospects ahead of this year’s draft, with Jeanty reportedly now among them.
