Buffalo Rumblings
The Buffalo Bills have begun to contact potential head coaching candidates, and two of the early reported candidates are familiar names. The team has reportedly reached out to former offensive coordinator Brian Daboll about its head coaching position, but Daboll isn’t the only former Bills offensive coordinator reported to be in the mix for the team’s head coaching position.
Reports indicate that Washington Commanders running backs coach Anthony Lynn, who worked on Buffalo’s staff under head coach Rex Ryan for the 2015 and 2016 seasons, has been contacted for an interview for the team’s head coaching vacancy. Lynn was Buffalo’s running backs coach during the 2015 season. Two weeks into the 2016 season, Lynn was promoted to assistant head coach/offensive coordinator after Greg Roman was fired. Then, after a 34-31 overtime loss to the Miami Dolphins that led to Ryan’s firing, Lynn was the interim head coach for the season finale, a 30-10 drubbing at the hands of the New York Jets.
Lynn was a finalist for the Bills’ head coaching job in 2017, which ultimately went to Sean McDermott. Lynn landed on his feet, becoming the Los Angeles Chargers’ head coach that same season. Lynn compiled a 33-31 record over four years as the Chargers’ head coach, including a 1-1 playoff record in 2018. That playoff victory, a 23-18 victory over the Baltimore Ravens, is the Chargers’ most recent playoff victory.
Lynn was fired by the Chargers following a 7-9 record in the 2020 NFL season. He served as the Detroit Lions offensive coordinator for the 2021 season, but he was relieved of those duties at the end of the year. He was the San Francisco 49ers assistant head coach/running backs coach during the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Lynn is currently the running backs coach/run game coordinator of the Washington Commanders, a position he’s held for the last two seasons.
