Report: Broncos senior personnel executive David Shaw has agreed to terms on a multi-year deal with the Lions

According to reports, David Shaw has agreed to terms with the Detroit Lions to become their new pass game coordinator.

According to NFL Network’s league insider Tom Pelissero, Broncos senior personnel executive David Shaw has agreed to terms on a multi-year deal with the Detroit Lions for him to become their passing game coordinator.

He will follow former Broncos pass game coordinator John Morton who was hired to become the Lions' new offensive coordinator under head coach Dan Campbell earlier this week. Now, Shaw will look to keep the Lions pass offense strong despite losing former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to the Bears.

Shaw joined the Broncos back in June of this past year and was going to join General Manager George Paton’s staff and would evaluate pro and college talent. He also interviewed for the Broncos head coaching job in 2023 before the team hired Sean Payton to be their coach.

He is a well-respected and rather intelligent football mind who recently re-signed from Stanford because of the direction of the football program. However, before that, he was widely regarded as one of the better football minds in the game. He also provided his insight on draft prospects during NFL Network’s draft coverage.

Shaw took over the Stanford job back in 2011 when now Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh left the program to be the 49ers’ head coach. Before that, he served as Harbaugh’s offensive coordinator at Stanford and even coached with Harbaugh at the University of San Diego as his passing game coordinator.

Now, Shaw does have some NFL experience as well. He spent nine years in the NFL before joining Harbaugh at the University of San Diego. He has stints with the Philadelphia Eagles(on the same coaching staff as Sean Payton) Oakland Raiders, and the Baltimore Ravens. So he is not just strictly a college coach but a coach with experience at both levels.

Shaw joins a growing list of Broncos coaches and executives who have been popular amongst other teams during this hiring cycle. Defensive Coordinator Vance Joseph interviewed with the Jets and Raiders for their head coaching positions, assistant GM Darren Mougey was hired as the New York Jets General Manager, tight ends coach Declan Doyle was hired as the Bears offensive coordinator, Morton was hired to be the Lions offensive coordinator, assistant special teams coach Chris Banjo was hired to be the Jets special teams coach and now, Shaw joins the Lions as their pass game coordinator.

I would expect more Broncos coaches to get more looks from other teams as these newly hired coaches begin to assemble their coaching staffs.
