Report: Broncos have re-signed veteran fullback Michael Burton

According to reports, the Broncos have re-signed run blocking specialist fullback Michael Burton to a one-year deal.

According to The Denver Post's Luca Evans, the Denver Broncos have re-signed veteran fullback Michael Burton to a one-year deal. 9NEWS Denver’s Mike Klis has confirmed this report as the Broncos bring back their run-blocking specialist.

Michael Burton is a 33-year-old fullback who will be entering his 11th season in the NFL and his third season with the Broncos. He was among Sean Payton’s first signings when he was hired by the Broncos and now will return to be his run-blocking specialist once again at fullback.

During the past two seasons for the Broncos, Burton has not missed a game and has played in all 34 regular-season games, while totaling one rushing touchdown and one receiving touchdown during that span. However, his main contributions to the team are his blocking in the run game. He is one of the better run-blocking fullbacks in the league and will look to open up running lanes for whoever is the Broncos' ball carrier next season.

The Broncos let former second round pick Javonte Williams walk in free agency and have yet to add to their running back room this offseason. However, they’re expected to spend a premium pick on the position in the draft and could add another later in the draft or sign a veteran after the draft. Either way, Burton will be blocking for some new ball carriers this upcoming season.

Improving the run game appears to be a priority of head coach Sean Payton this offseason and re-signing Burton is part of that plan. He is a well-liked player by the coaches and the locker room and brings some more veteran leadership to the team. Overall, I like this move and I hope Burton can continue to open up running lanes for the Broncos ball carriers this upcoming season.
