Are the Titans pondering a change at general manager?

The Tennessee Titans suffered another embarrassing setback on Sunday, losing 20-13 to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Titans have now been swept by the Jaguars and Indianapolis Colts this season. If they’re defeated by the Houston Texans in next week’s regular-season finale, which would be great news for their draft pick, Brian Callahan and Ran Carthon will have finished their first season together 1-5 in the AFC South and 3-14 overall.

Though Carthon is technically in his second season as GM, it certainly feels like he and Callahan are a packaged deal. Apparently not, according to recent comments made by Buck Reising.

“Callahan is more than likely going to be back, but Carthon is more up in the air at this point in time,” Reising said via a live stream.

Firing Carthon and retaining Callahan would be an incredibly stupid decision by owner Amy Adams Strunk. Firstly, it’s clear that the GM and head coach “collaborated” to create this on-field mess we’re forced to witness every Sunday. Secondly, firing Carthon a year after he “won” a power struggle with Mike Vrabel would look incredibly foolish.

If another general manager were to enter the fray, forcing them to retain Callahan would be equally stupid after how poor his coaching debut has gone. It’s worth noting Adams Strunk did something similar when she hired Jon Robinson, forcing Mike Mularkey on him. Robinson had to pretend he was on-board with Mularkey, and then fired him after a year in which they made the playoffs, hiring his guy in Vrabel.

There are multiple layers to this discussion. Carthon and Callahan should either be treated with patience, or they should be fired together. If there’s any wavering regarding Carthon and Callahan, the Titans should clean house before they allow a regime they’re losing patience with to make a franchise-altering decision in the 2025 NFL Draft, as early as No. 1 or 2 overall.

One of the worst seasons in Titans history will conclude against the Texans next weekend. Adams Strunk has some bold decisions to consider, whether she retains Callahan and Carthon, or dismisses both and starts anew again. A half measure shouldn’t garner any consideration whatsoever, but you truly never know, especially when in-the-know reporters like Reising are reporting that a half-change is within the realm of possibility.
