Well, that didn't take long.
As reported by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero and ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Chicago Bears are set to hire Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson as the franchise’s 19th head coach.
“A new day in Chicago: The Bears are finalizing a deal to hire Ben Johnson as their head coach, per sources,” Tweeted Pelissero. “Johnson is set to fly there soon, and contract parameters are in place. Barring a last-minute snag, the Lions OC lands with an NFC North rival.”
“Bear down: Chicago is finalizing a deal to hire Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson as its next head coach,” Schefted Tweeted, “sources tell ESPN. Bears are getting their man.”
The Lions just lost last night in the divisional round of the playoffs, and Johnson and the Bears didn't even bother with an in-person interview.
The Bears knew he was their guy, and Johnson knew Chicago was the best destination.
“Tom Brady and the Raiders made a push for Ben Johnson, and the Jaguars also interviewed him,” Pelissero reported. “But Chicago was always the most likely landing spot. Negotiations heated up quickly this morning, and now the Bears have landed a talented mentor for No. 1 pick Caleb Williams.”
We’ll have more as this situation develops.
