Remember When Howie Roseman was Considered a Bad Drafter?

Reddit user @aldrinjaysac shared this on the Eagles’ page. It appears to be a screen grab from a recent NFL Live broadcast and shows Howie Roseman’s last four years of draft picks over the first three rounds:

Jesus. We knew Howie was on a great run, but there’s not a single miss in that entire group. Maybe the jury is still out on Jalyx Hunt, but he’s made a couple of plays in the postseason after receiving an elevated role due to Brandon Graham’s injury. Meantime, Jalen Carter looks like a future DPOY, Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean are rookies playing like veterans, Cam Jurgens slid into Jason Kelce’s role with zero issues, and Landon Dickerson is one of the best guards in the game. DeVonta Smith has 4,000 receiving yards in four regular seasons, Nolan Smith and Jordan Davis both improved their play in 2024, and Nakobe Dean, Milton Williams, and Tyler Steen have all answered the call, and more.

This is just four years of high drafts picks, by the way. It doesn’t even include guys like Sydney Brown, Kelee Ringo, Grant Calcaterra, Kenny Gainwell, and Will Shipley, who have all contributed as various levels this season, some on offense, some filling in on defense, and absolutely on special teams. Tanner McKee looks like he has a future and Moro Ojomo was a 7th rounder out of Texas.

It’s funny because it doesn’t seem like it was that long ago that Howie was considered a spotty drafter. Remember when people were begging him to just take the best SEC players available? He did that in 2021 with Smitty and Dickerson. It’s hard to say how many of the previous misses were his fault, vs., say, capitulating to Doug Pederson on a preference or two, but Howie was in charge of player-personnel for a team that selected Jalen Reagor, Davion Taylor, K’Von Wallace, Andre Dillard, and J.J. Arcega-Whiteside. They made some good picks over those years, too, but he’s hitting at close to a 100% rate over the last four seasons. It’s incredible, and it doesn’t even include free agent decision making, like bringing in Zack Baun and Mekhi Becton and Saquon Barkley. My god.
