We have knee-jerk opinions about Eagles roster moves. It’s time to look back on them one year later to see how they actually performed.
The Philadelphia Eagles finished the 2024 NFL season by lifting the Lombardi Trophy after defeating the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22. A championship season coming to a conclusion leaves little reason to look back and grade, because the grade recorded in the history books will be that of Super Bowl Champions.
However, the championship roster of the Eagles wasn’t assembled all at once, so here’s a look back at the pieces that were added the 2024 offseason through various means, including free agency, trades, the draft and even the waiver wire, along with a quick glance at where each of them is now.
Free agency kicked off the offseason in March, and the Eagles knocked it out of the park.
Barkley led the NFL in rushing, finishing the season with 2,005 yards in spite of resting in preparation for the playoffs and sitting out the 20-13 Week 18 win over the New York Giants. In the wake of the most productive season of his career, Barkley signed a two-year extension that makes him the highest-paid running back in NFL history and has him under contract through 2028.
Primarily a special teams player during his time with the New Orleans Saints, Baun flourished in Vic Fangio’s defense, being selected as a first-team All-Pro while finishing fifth in voting for Defensive Player of the Year. He will return in 2025 after signing a three-year contract in the offseason.
After battling injuries early in his career with the New York Jets, Becton found a home starting at guard for the Eagles and logging the second highest snap count of his career in 2024. Becton will be taking his talents to the West Coast in 2025 after signing with the Los Angeles Chargers in free agency.
Burks started a pair of games on defense for the Eagles, but more notably finished the 2024 season second on the team in special teams snaps. He will not be back for 2025 after signing with the Cincinnati Bengals in free agency.
After final roster cuts, he signed to the practice squad. He was promoted to the 53-man roster in October, and finished the season with six catches for 30 yards. Signed with the Cowboys in the offseason.
CJGJ started sixteen games for Philadelphia, pulling in six interceptions on the way to helping the Eagles win the Super Bowl. Gardner-Johnson was traded to the Houston Texans in the offseason in a deal that brought back Kenyon Green and a fifth-round pick.
Gates played in nine games, starting one, after being signed from the practice squad. He was released at the end of February and remain a free agent.
