Joe Mixon missed all of 2025 and requested a release from the Texans this spring. The veteran running back has remained on the open market since then, but he is unlikely to return to the NFL.
During a recent Texans training camp preview (video link), KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson went into detail on Mixon’s situation. He reported a foot injury resulted in the year-long absence in this case, with an infection leading to a setback in recovery. A number of treatment options were sought out, but they were unsuccessful.
Per Wilson, Mixon recently underwent another surgery on his foot. While the prognosis is positive with respect to living a normal life, Mixon has informed some of his former Bengals teammates he is “not going to play football anymore.” Barring any unforeseen developments as a result, a retirement announcement in the near future should be forthcoming.
Mixon spent his first seven seasons in Cincinnati. As a member of the Bengals, he was a an offensive mainstay, surpassing 1,000 rushing yards four times and racking up 62 total touchdowns. The former second-round pick was in position to be released in 2024, but a trade agreement with the Texans wound up being worked out. Upon arrival in Houston, Mixon signed a two-year extension.
That seemed to set him up for a multiyear run on his new team, but the injury meant Mixon only played with the Texans for 2024. During that campaign, the two-time Pro Bowler handled lead back duties while recording 1,325 scrimmage yards and scoring 12 total touchdowns. Houston’s rushing attack suffered in Mixon’s absence, ranking 22nd in yards per game in 2025. Improvement this year will be sought out with trade acquisition David Montgomery, who was added via a deal with the Lions. Like Mixon before him, Montgomery agreed to a new Houston contract upon arrival.
While the Texans are in position to move forward, Mixon has not been connected to any interest from teams during his free agent spell. Given this latest development on his health situation, it is highly unlikely that will change.
