The Baltimore Ravens have been named a landing spot for Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields this offseason.
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Justin Fields will become free agents following the 2024 season. Without a new deal in sight, many believe they could be headed elsewhere, which could include staying in the AFC North and joining a division rival.
Tyler Brooke of The 33rd Team named the Baltimore Ravens as a top landing spot for Fields in free agency.
“While Fields would likely never see the field, he’d have an opportunity to work side by side with arguably the best quarterback in the NFL right now, Lamar Jackson. The potential three-time MVP has found out how to develop as a lethal passer without sacrificing his mobility, which is something that Fields could benefit from,” Brooke writes. “For the Ravens, there aren’t many other suitable QB2 options that fit what they do. Journeyman veteran Josh Johnson was the backup this year, but the 38-year-old is unlikely to come back this offseason, with retirement more likely on that table.”
On paper, Fields would be a great backup to Jackson, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to happen. The 25-year-old spent most of his 2024 season on the bench and will likely look for an opportunity to start in 2025.
If he doesn’t find that on the open market, then he may entertain another one-year stint with a competitive team like the Ravens, but that feels unlikely in an offseason that is expected to have weak free agency and rookie quarterback classes.
The Steelers aren’t ready to close the door on a return by Fields, either.
The No. 11 overall pick in 2021 flashed his upside during the first six games of the season. He threw for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns and just one interception while leading the Steelers to a 4-2 start. He also rushed for 231 yards and five touchdowns during the span.
Fields will likely cost a lot less money to bring back compared to Wilson, too.
Nonetheless, if the Steelers want to bring back Fields, they should make that decision sooner rather than later with the new league year slowly approaching.
Allowing Fields to test his value on the open market could hurt Pittsburgh’s chances of re-signing him this offseason. That would then leave the Steelers in a very undesirable position of having to choose between 36-year-old Wilson and whatever is left on the open market.
