Rashawn Slater’s ex-wife spoke out to quiet a narrative surrounding the couple’s divorce and his recently agreed upon $114 million contract extension with the Los Angeles Chargers. She’s not happy with a “weird” storyline being pushed following the signing.
Stassney Brown called out one popular NFL social media account for using her divorce to drive engagement. She wants to be removed from any reporting on Slater’s record-setting deal.
The offensive tackle was drafted by the Chargers with the 13th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Slater and Brown were married in 2022 after he wrapped up his rookie year.

They remained together as the Northwestern product continued building his NFL career.
They did so in record-setting fashion. Slater was initially set to play on his fifth-year rookie option in 2025 with his future for ’26 being unclear. That’s now changed.
He inked a four-year deal ahead of the 2025 NFL season. That extension was worth $114 million.
His $28.5 million average annual salary is the highest ever for an offensive tackle.
The shiny new contract came after heartbreak, however. A friend of Rashawn Slater’s ex-wife confirmed that the couple had recently split on social media.
And they’ve been divorced so don’t blame it on my girl https://t.co/KEsKtLe8Rk

Some suggested that the divorce impacted the timing of Slater’s contract extension announcement. Brown suggests that wasn’t the case.
After the signing went public, a few popular NFL social media sites mentioned Brown in their updates on Rashawn Slater. She took a moment to blast them for their insensitivity.
This is deplorable. I hold nothing but support for Rashawn. His contract is not about me. I think we should focus on what’s most important here, and that is his career and his success. Please stop including me in this narrative. He deserves his moment. https://t.co/to8qdKQGYl

She called the sites “deplorable” for attempting to use her heartache as an engagement tool. A number of followers echoed that sentiment.
“This post is weird,” one commenter wrote. “What an insanely weird thing to post about a private divorce we know nothing about,” said another.
This isn’t the first instance in which the divorce of a high-profile athlete has been put under the spotlight. Earlier this year, a similar situation with former NBA star Dwight Howard went viral.
Nevertheless, Stassney Brown appears to have put her divorce in the past. She’d like the internet to do the same.
