Week 1 of NFL football is finally here and the Los Angeles Rams open their season at home in SoFi Stadium against the visiting Houston Texans. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:25 p.m. PST and will be televised regionally on CBS.
Both teams are looking to build on strong 2024 seasons that culminated in trips to the playoffs and wins in their opening round games. The 11-8 Rams knocked off the Minnesota Vikings 27-9 in Round 1 before succumbing in the northeastern snow to the Philadelphia Eagles 28-22. On the AFC side, also at 11-8, Houston pistol-whipped the L.A. Chargers 32-12 in their WildCard Round and then were sent home by the Kansas City Chiefs 23-14.
The most intriguing matchups to watch should be the edge battles on both sides of the ball. The Rams ends Jared Verse and Byron Young will attack Texans rookie left tackle Aireonte Ersery and former Round 1 pick Tytus Howard on the right side. Houston has two outstanding defensive ends of their own, Dannielle Hunter and Will Anderson. It will be on L.A.’s bookends, Alaric Jackson (LT) and Rob Havenstein (RT) to stymie them. Jackson was recently cleared to play in Week 1 after battling a blood clot issue all spring and summer.
Offensively, fans should not expect the Rams to depart very far from what they normally do. With the additions WR Davante Adams and TE Terrance Ferguson, there may be some twists, but expect them to run between the tackles, use motion to manipulate the defense, and try to throw downfield. The Texans could mirror the L.A. offense with ex-Rams coach Nick Caley as their new offensive coordinator and QB CJ Stroud slinging it to a group of big wide receivers.
