After grabbing a share of the NFC West lead this Sunday past, the Los Angeles Rams look to separate from one of the co-leaders in a Thursday Night Football matchup. On October 2, L.A. welcomes the San Francisco 49ers into SoFi Stadium for the mid-week tilt. Kickoff is set for 5:15 p.m. PST.

It’s three-team logjam at 3-1 atop the West between the Rams, 49ers, and Seattle Seahawks. L.A. got their share with a come-from-behind 27-20 victory over the previously unbeaten Indianapolis Colts. The ’Niners lost their Sunday game and sole possession of first place in the division, falling at home to the Jacksonville Jaguars 26-21.

Mystery best describes the 49ers defense. According to Pro Football Reference, they rank well in scoring allowed (7th, 18.8), total yards allowed (5th, 1122), third down conversions ( 2nd, 32%) and scoring drives (4th, 31.9%). Are towards the middle of the pack against the run, total rushing yards (16th, 462), yards per attempt (12th, 4.0), and yards per game (17th, 115.5). And they struggle in pass completion percentage allowed (25th, 68.3%), passer rating allowed (21st, 95.9), pass rush pressure (29th, 11.6%), and sacks (29th, 5). They have zero interceptions on the year and have now gone 12 straight games without a pick.

A quick view of the past three games stat lines could lead fans to believe the Rams should pound the football on the ground, but an air attack might be the better answer. San Francisco has not been able to muster much of a pass rush and have been giving up short passes at a high rate. So far this season, L.A. quarterback Matthew Stafford has been successful in the short and mid pass depth and more importantly, in protecting the football. He has a stellar 19:3 touchdown to interception ratio over his last 11 games.
