The Los Angeles Rams will gain another tight end when they face the Arizona Cardinals in Week 18. The team officially activated Tyler Higbee from injured reserve, allowing him to return from an ankle injury.
Higbee officially rejoined the Rams’ active roster on Saturday, NFL insider Tom Pelissero reported. He will immediately rejoin Los Angeles’ four-man tight end room, which also includes Colby Parkinson, Davis Allen and rookie Terrance Ferguson.
Ferguson, however, is listed as doubtful for Week 18 with a hamstring injury.
Higbee had accumulated 20 catches for 190 receiving yards and two touchdowns in nine games before landing on injured reserve. He is set to return for the first time since Week 11.
The move was inevitable after Higbee logged three full practices in Week 18. The Rams officially activated him just three days after opening his 21-day practice window.
Although Higbee started seven of the Rams’ first nine games, he will return to a much more crowded tight end room in Week 18. Parkinson, Ferguson and Allen have all stepped up over the last month, as Los Angeles utilized more two-tight end sets with Davante Adams also injured.
The Cardinals present a great matchup for every Rams tight end active in Week 18. Arizona has allowed the sixth-most receiving yards to the position this season, according to Pro Football Reference.
Higbee’s return could spell the end of veteran Nick Vannett’s brief tenure with the team. The Rams signed Vannett off the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad two weeks after placing Higbee on injured reserve.
Los Angeles is no longer able to clinch a first-round bye, but playoff seeding is still in play. The Rams can improve to No. 5 with a win over the Cardinals, where they would face either the Carolina Panthers or Tampa Bay Buccaneers. A loss would keep them locked at No. 6 and set up a matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles or Chicago Bears.
