The Los Angeles Rams had to battle much more than the Chicago Bears in the NFC Divisional Round. The team went from Sunny California to Chicago’s blistering cold, and they had to find a way to stay warm.
With inclement weather, rapid winds, and temperatures around 10 degrees at kickoff, the Rams had to think outside the box.
Following the win, Rams star DT Poona Ford tipped his team’s hand. He revealed that several players had poured cayenne pepper on their socks to stay warm during the game:
“Al Woods! Shoutout Al Woods!” Ford said in a now-viral clip.

Other players confirmed the information. Apparently, that trick has been a bit of an open secret around the league for a while:
“There were some guys on the team pouring cayenne pepper on their feet,” Rams safety Kam Curl told Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer after the game. “That’s something I’ve never seen before. I didn’t try it this time, but they said it worked. So I’m going to think about it. But I might not do it. That was pretty crazy.”
The game was a classic playoff contest at Soldier Field. The weather was a major factor from start to finish, but that didn’t stop Sean McVay’s team from taking care of business.
They even had to survive a miracle TD by Caleb Williams, probably the best play in the playoffs so far.
Now, they will have to think of other creative ways to deal with tough winds. They will travel to Seattle to face off with the Seahawks at Lumen Field, and while it won’t be Chicago cold, it’ll still be pretty cold.
Once again, Sean McVay proved to be one of the best head coaches in the game. Despite not having the most stacked team in the NFC, the Rams are one of two teams standing in contention for a Super Bowl ticket.
This is also a testament to the tough NFC West. Three teams from that division made the playoffs, and two will square off in the NFC Championship Game.
The Rams and Seahawks split their season series, with the Rams taking the first meeting by two points and the Seahawks then getting back at them in overtime. It doesn’t get any closer than that.
Still, the Rams have a playoff pedigree and the slight edge in the coaching department. Will that be enough? Remains to be seen.
