The Los Angeles Rams lost to the Seattle Seahawks by a final score of 38-37 in Week 16 of the NFL season. This was about as hyped-up a regular season game as there can be and the game delivered. It was a back-and-forth affair between two teams that want to win the NFC West and more. Seattle came out on top, and the Rams threw away a double-digit lead.
The Rams had already clinched a playoff spot, and now Seattle has as well.
Seattle drew first blood with a rushing score after the Rams failed to convert on a fourth down for their opening drive.
The Rams didn’t respond swiftly, but they were able to score back-to-back fields goals to make the score 7-6 as L.A.‘a defense found its stride and Sean McVay’s offense was doing enough to stay in the game.
L.A.’s defense notched another stop to give the Rams the chance to take a lead and Matthew Stafford found Terrance Ferguson for a TD and a 13-7 lead after the successful extra point.
The Rams had a chance to get the ball back with about 2-minutes to go in the half, but instead, Seattle converted on a third and long with a Kenneth Walker run. The Rams went from having a chance to take a more sizable lead to putting Seattle right back in the game.
Fortunately for the Rams and their defense, they later forced a fumble on Cooper Kupp while Seattle was driving and the score stayed 13-7 at the half.
Out of halftime, Seattle took a quick lead with long run and score by Walker as L.A.’s defense again was gashed on the ground and Seattle took 14-13 lead after the extra point.
The Rams then retook the lead with a lengthy drive and a Harrison Mevis field goal to make the score 16-14.
It was on Seattle’s next drive where the Seahawks committed their second turnover as Sam Darnold threw an interception to give the ball back to L.A. at the one-yard line. Blake Corum punched the ball in a play later, and the Rams had a 23-14 lead about midway through the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter with about 13-minutes to go in the game, Stafford found Puka Nacua for a touchdown and a 30-14 lead after the Mevis extra point.
Seattle needed to score to put themselves back in this game, and they drove down near the goal line, but Darnold threw his second interception of the night as the Rams had a chance to basically put this game away.
Instead, the Rams were forced to punt with about 8-minutes to go, still keeping Seattle in this one with a chance to bounce back, and bounce back they did with a punt return by Rashid Shaheed to make the game 30-22 after the successful two-point conversion from Darnold to Kupp.
