Rams Roster Breakdown: Who’s a lock, on the bubble, and a long shot?
Turf Show Times Turf Show Times

The Los Angeles Rams are heading into their final game of the preseason on Saturday when they take on the Cleveland Browns. A 53-man roster prediction is interesting, but that lacks context regarding how many roster spots are truly available. With difficult decisions looming, the goal here will be to look at who’s a lock, who’s on the bubble, and which players are considered long shots. This is one of the more competitive Rams rosters in quite some time, so let’s dive right in.

Locks (44)

Offense (22)

  • Quarterback: Matthew Stafford, Jimmy Garoppolo
  • Running Back: Kyren Williams, Blake Corum, Jarquez Hunter
  • Wide Receiver: Puka Nacua, Davante Adams, Tutu Atwell, Jordan Whittington
  • Tight End: Tyler Higbee, Terrance Ferguson, Colby Parkinson, Davis Allen
  • Offensive Tackle: Alaric Jackson, DJ Humphries, Rob Havenstein, Warren McClendon
  • Interior Offensive Line: Steve Avila, Coleman Shelton, Kevin Dotson

Defense/Special Teams (22)

  • Linebacker: Omar Speights, Nate Landman, Chris Paul Jr.
  • EDGE: Jared Verse, Byron Young, Josaiah Stewart
  • Cornerback: Ahkello Witherspoon, Darious Williams, Cobie Durant, Emmanuel Forbes
  • Safety: Quentin Lake, Kam Curl, Kam Kinchens, Jaylen McCollough
  • Defensive Line: Poona Ford, Tyler Davis, Kobie Turner, Braden Fiske, Ty Hamilton
  • Special Teams: Joshua Karty, Ethan Evans, Alex Ward

There shouldn’t be any surprises here and it’s hard to disagree with much of this list. All of these players are either starters or important depth. When the 53-man roster is released after the final preseason game, it would be a surprise if anybody listed above wasn’t on it. The only serious questions might be Davis Allen and Warren McClendon. Still, the Rams aren’t cutting Allen, and McClendon is the backup right tackle.

Defensively it’s much of the same and this brings the locks to 44. That means that there are nine potentially available spots on the roster. There are more than 30 players competing for literally a handful of spots.

Not-Quite Locks (4)

Offense (2)

  • Quarterback: Stetson Bennett
  • Interior Offensive Line: Beaux Limmer

Defense (2)

  • EDGE: Nick Hampton, Brennan Jackson

A case can be made that Stetson Bennett should be considered a lock. He’s done enough in the preseason to prove himself worthy of the third quarterback spot. Still, this is such a deep roster that it might make sense to try and get Bennett on the practice squad to open up a roster spot. That is highly unlikely to happen, but it’s something to consider which is why I have Bennett in this group.

The interior offensive line also has a lot of depth. Limmer got starting experience last year, but if the Rams like the upside of others, his spot on the roster isn’t quite guaranteed. The same can be said at edge rusher. There is a chance that the Rams keep just four edge rushers. If that is the case, one of those two would get cut.

On Bubble (14)

Offense (10)

  • Running Back: Cody Schrader,...
