UNITY TWP., Pa. — The Pittsburgh Steelers are going seven rounds with the weather, and through five practice sessions, the rain showers are winning.

The Steelers moved their practice on Tuesday indoors at St. Vincent College, opting for a walkthrough in the gymnasium after thunderstorms rolled in just before the start of the scheduled 1:55 p.m. practice.

They had been scheduled to work in pads for the first time on Tuesday, with the traditional backs on backers drill and other highlights postponed until Wednesday.

Through five scheduled practices, three have been impacted by rain. Two were called short of the scheduled end of practice, before Tuesday’s was moved inside entirely. Friday’s practice was significantly shortened, while Sunday’s practice was called just about five minutes before the scheduled end.

Head coach Mike Tomlin moved the team’s practices back to afternoons this year after mostly working in the morning in 2024.

The Steelers have limited options when it comes to rain at training camp. They can move practices to the morning or decide to bail from Latrobe entirely and return to Pittsburgh to practice at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex.

They have done both in the past, but Tomlin elected to roll the dice off a 50-50 forecast on Tuesday that didn’t go his way.

That won’t be a problem for much longer. St. Vincent College is currently constructing the Dunlap Family Athletic and Recreation Center, an indoor practice facility adjacent to Chuck Noll Field. The facility, paid for in part by the Steelers, is set to open in November at a cost of $20 million.

The Steelers have plenty of other opportunities to put the pads on this week. They have practices scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday at St. Vincent College, Friday night at Latrobe Memorial Stadium, and Saturday and Sunday at St. Vincent.

Wednesday’s forecast from WPXI’s Scott Harbaugh includes a 30% chance of a stray thunderstorm.
