The Las Vegas Raiders drafted Fernando Mendoza first overall, but Klint Kubiak made clear that status guarantees nothing. The Raiders head coach issued a blunt challenge Thursday after mandatory minicamp.

Mendoza enters the break as the prized rookie quarterback, yet the Raiders’ competition still includes Kirk Cousins and Aidan O’Connell. Kubiak wants daily progress before training camp, not comfort from draft position.

That message matters because Cousins has taken most first-team reps during spring work. Mendoza has mostly operated with the second and third groups, giving him a different climb than most No. 1 picks face.

ESPN’s Ryan McFadden posted on X, formerly Twitter, sharing Kubiak’s message from the Raiders’ facility in Henderson, Nevada, about Mendoza’s development since the 2026 NFL Draft.

“You better be getting better every day in this league, or you’re gonna get passed up. I hope that would be his answer, and we’ll find out if he was right or not come the fall.”

Kubiak on Fernando Mendoza, saying he's leaps and bounds ahead of where he was when he arrived:

Kubiak’s message gives Mendoza clear summer homework. The Raiders do not need to rush their rookie while Cousins provides veteran stability and familiarity inside the quarterback room.

Still, the challenge carries weight. Mendoza won the Heisman Trophy and led Indiana to a national championship, but the NFL resets every resume quickly.

Kubiak also praised Mendoza’s growth, noting the rookie sits far ahead of his arrival point. However, the larger message centered on urgency, consistency, and proving he can handle the offense when camp resumes.

For Las Vegas, that approach establishes a strict standard. The Raiders can protect their signal-caller’s development without handing him the Week 1 job by default.

The next test comes when players return for training camp in late July. Mendoza must show command, timing, and comfort in Kubiak’s offense.

For now, the Raiders have made their standard clear. Mendoza brings the draft pedigree, but Kubiak wants proof when the quarterback competition resumes this fall.
