The Las Vegas Raiders are currently gearing up for the 2026 NFL season, having drafted quarterback Fernando Mendoza number one overall out of Indiana last month. Mendoza has a great mentor to learn from in Raiders part-owner Tom Brady, who has been hoping to help guide the team back into prominence amid an era of obscurity.

Recently, Brady spoke on one problem he has with the NFL rules, which is fining players big sums of money for on-field infractions.

“What they start doing is they start fining you $50,000, $75,000,” Brady said on the Stick To Football podcast, per Mike Florio of NBC Sports’ Pro Football Talk. “And I’m saying, like, I hate that. I hate the fact that, like, you sign a contract for $2 million a year, $5 million a year, and it’s so easy for someone to say, ‘Give me $75,000. Give me $50,000. Oh, it’s your second offense? That’s $100,000. That’s your third offense, $200,000.’ . . .

“What job is like that in the world? Where you make a mistake at your job, and they come in, they go, ‘Hey, we’re gonna take your salary away.’ And then people are like, ‘Yeah, you should take his salary away.’”

Brady was no stranger to discipline from his days as a player, having been suspended multiple games for his role in the infamous Deflategate scandal, among other controversies in his career. The NFL may not appreciate that Brady, now a team owner, is technically lobbying against the owners’ best interests by speaking out against fines on players, but the players themselves sure will appreciate the sentiment.

At this point, it’s hard to imagine the league cutting back on fines anytime soon considering their track record, but if anyone could move the needle in that department, it’s Brady.
