The Las Vegas Raiders drafted running back Ashton Jeanty with their first pick of the 2025 NFL Draft. The ball carrier is now making his way through training camp ahead of his professional debut.
Jeanty donned No. 2 in the backfield at Boise State. It was a number expected to be unavailable with his new team. He wasted no time in making sure that wouldn’t be the case.
The rookie burst onto the scene as a college player, rushing for 2,601 yards as a junior. That production was good enough for runner-up honors in the Heisman trophy race.
Jeanty skipped his senior year to enter the NFL Draft. It paid off when he was picked sixth overall by Las Vegas. He became the highest drafted player to sign his first year deal this offseason, which was valued at $35.9 million over four years.
It included a $22.75 million signing bonus. He’s already had to fork over some of that cash to a teammate!
Carlson has been the Raiders‘ kicker since 2018. In that time, he’s connected on 202 of his 228 field goals with a long of 57 yards. He led the NFL in makes in 2021 before being named All-Pro a year later.
Carlson initially wore No. 8 with the franchise before switching to No. 2 in 2020. He was Jeanty’s first call after learning his draft destination.
Ashton Jeanty wouldn’t say exactly how much he paid Daniel Carlson for the jersey number. He did say, though, that it was enough to purchase a home in some areas, or a luxury car, or college tuition.
Most would assume the total would fall in the six-figure range. Jeanty made the initial offer. Carlson upped the ante!
The two agreed that a portion of the payment would be donated to charity. In the end, everyone seems to have gotten their wish. Jeanty will get his college number while Carlson can go back to his original No. 8 with a little extra dough in his pocket.
The tailback will now look ahead to making his debut with a new team – and a new backfield stance – in Las Vegas. He’s hoping to make an immediate impact on the football field. The Raiders kick off the 2025 campaign against the Patriots in September.
