Before the NFL Draft took place and prior to veteran Kirk Cousins joining the Las Vegas Raiders, rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza was linked with legendary minority owner Tom Brady. During a leaked conversation from the NFL Combine in early March, a humorous phone exchange occurred in which the Indiana national champion respectfully referred to the seven-time Super Bowl winner as “Mr. Brady.” Brady playfully corrected him during their chat.
Although Mendoza has stated to the Raiders media that he prefers to keep his personal conversations with Brady private, he recently shared valuable advice from the NFL icon. A report by Sports Illustrated highlighted how Brady is personally mentoring the rookie quarterback to help the franchise secure a long-term leader. Disregarding his usual privacy stance, Mendoza revealed Brady’s key insights on what it takes to lead an NFL offense:
“I think what he [Tom Brady] said is that as a quarterback, you need to be the best at everything. You need to be the most competitive, you need to be the strongest leader, and you must display mental and physical toughness. You have to embody these qualities and lead by example in order to earn equity and respect from your teammates so that you can lead effectively.”
As the rookie quarterback aims to absorb these crucial lessons during offseason workouts, his dynamic with newly acquired veteran Kirk Cousins has garnered significant attention. Although Cousins signed a lucrative five-year, $172 million contract in April, just before Mendoza was drafted, Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak firmly shut down the popular narrative of mentorship, clarifying his stance on the team’s quarterback competition.
