The Las Vegas Raiders are currently taking part in minicamp as they prepare for the upcoming 2026 NFL season. The Raiders are coming off a busy offseason in which they did as many expected and drafted Fernando Mendoza number one overall out of Indiana on the heels of his Heisman Trophy win.
The Raiders also signed veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins to their roster in free agency, and recently, Cousins gave his report on how Mendoza has looked so far at practice.
“He’s doing everything he should be doing,” Cousins said, per Sam Warren of The Athletic. “You just keep stacking days one day at a time and keep building. You keep doing that, you look back and it’s been 14 seasons, like for me. So he has good habits, and those will serve him well as he goes forward.”
Unlike when he signed with the Atlanta Falcons two years ago and was blindsided by their subsequent selection of Michael Penix Jr., Cousins joined the Raiders knowing he would be sliding into a backup/mentor role for Mendoza sooner rather than later.
It’s possible that Cousins could be Las Vegas’ starter for the first game of the season as Mendoza continues to adapt to the pro level, but the expectation is that the Raiders will start their number one overall pick at some point this season.
Mendoza left no doubt about his status as the best quarterback in his class by leading Indiana to the national championship last year, and now, he has one of the league’s most reliable veteran quarterbacks in Cousins to look to as a mentor.
The Raiders’ season is scheduled to get underway on September 13 with a home game against the Miami Dolphins.
