North Carolina running back has skillset to become a standout in the NFL
The Las Vegas Raiders were one of the worst running football teams in 2024. Some would say they were the worst, and the stats back their opinion. The Raiders were last in Rushing EPA and 32nd overall in total rushing yards.
There wasn't one running back on the team who rushed for 500 yards during the season. With the Raiders hiring Chip Kelly, who excels in the run game, fans expect to see a change in the run game. If they are eying a young quarterback, a steady rushing attack can help alleviate any issues they might have adjusting to the NFL game.
In this year's draft, the running back class is stacked with players who could become full-time starters. One of the best running back prospects available is Omarion Hampton out of North Carolina. Hampton accumulated 1660 yards rushing his last year in college after having 1500 in 2023. He is ranked 28th on Daniel Jeremiah's board and could be an option for the Raiders at pick 39.
Hampton is a big-body running back listed at 6'1 220 pounds before the combine. It displays itself on the field, where he runs angry and punishes defenders in his path. In the play below, Hampton is trying to get a first down in short yardage by jumping over the pile. Instead, he gives the linebacker a big blow in the air and drags him into the end zone for a touchdown.
His long speed makes him worthy of a first or second-round pick. He had 26 runs over 15 yards on the season and has breakaway speed at 220 pounds. An excellent example is shown in the run below. Hampton sets up the linebacker with his eyes with the flow of the split zone. He has the vision and patience to wait for the hole to open and accelerates for a 75-yard touchdown.
One of his best attributes is his patience, which allows him to navigate through blocks and find creases. On this run, he waits for the tight end to get to the second level, knowing he has a hole opening if he is patient. Hampton exhibits a smooth cut inside and gets good yardage on the play.
In the passing game, Hampton can help block and catch the football. He can run routes on the outside and has excellent hands to match. Also, if the play-caller can be in space, it can become a home run. North Carolina does a shovel pass to Hampton, and he takes it for the 50-yard touchdown.
Hampton has tremendous upside at the next level and could push himself into the first round with a good combine. He might not be there for the Raiders at No. 39, but it could elevate the running game to new heights.
