Raiders have big presence at Boise State’s pro day.
Well, this won’t slow down the Ashton Jeanty-Las Vegas Raiders’ mock draft frenzy.
The Raiders had a visible and important presence at the Boise State pro day Wednesday, which, of course, featured the Broncos’ star running back Ashton Jeanty. Among the Raiders’ contingent in Boise was general manager John Spytek and running back coach Deland McCullough as documented by Boise State beat writer B.J. Rains.
On the surface, the Raiders’ big presence in Boise doesn’t mean much. All teams do their due diligence prior to the draft and attend at pro days around the country is routine for every time.
But this one hits a bit different.
The Raiders’ badly need a new lead running back and it is clear new head coach Pete Carroll and offensive coordinator Chip Kelly want to run the ball often to assist new starting quarterback Geno Smith.
Of course, Jeanty has been the most popular mock draft selection for the Raiders with the No. 6 pick for weeks.
Again, it would be naive and lazy to assume the Raiders are going to make Jeanty their draft pick just because of their heavy presence in Boise this week. But the reality is if a team is sending its top decision maker and its position coach to see a player, they are definitely highly considering the player. So yes, the Jeanty-Raiders hype is real.
Whether or not it means he will end up in the Silver and Black remains to be seen, but with the draft exactly four weeks away, the possibility looms.
