The Pittsburgh Steelers have their own way of doing things. That method gave Mike McCarthy‘s team its quarterback for this upcoming season, but their future behind center is murky.

While disgraced signal-caller Brendan Sorsby would bring baggage, he could also give the Steelers another option for life post-Aaron Rodgers. Sorsby, 22, recently applied for the NFL Supplemental Draft after gambling issues surfaced.

“The Steelers have been in this malaise forever, where they’re kind of a play-it-safe organization, ‘We don’t fire coaches, we spend our money on defense,'” Fox Sports’ Colin Cowherd said Monday. “Even hiring Mike McCarthy, it kinda felt like, ‘Eh. That’s kinda safe.’ … What would be more new-school than going to the supplemental draft, getting a kid with an addiction, and saying, ‘We gotta roll the dice here.’ Because you’re too good with Aaron Rodgers to be a top-10-12 pick next year.

“So you’re gonna have to give up loads of draft capital to get an Arch Manning, to get a Dante Moore.”

Sorsby threw for 2,800 yards and 27 touchdowns last season with Cincinnati before transferring to Texas Tech.

“I’ve got nothing against Drew Allar or Will Howard. They’re both fine,” Cowherd said. “They’re backups. Sorsby’s a starting NFL quarterback. And remember, quarterbacks come from strange places. (Tom) Brady, sixth round. Joe Montana, Russell Wilson, third round. (Patrick) Mahomes didn’t have a winning record in college. Josh Allen didn’t get a scholarship offer out of high school.

“Go look at a lot of our quarterbacks. The routes aren’t as linear as you think. There’s bumps, there’s deviations, and so I think there are teams — like Pittsburgh — where I think it’s worth the risk.”
