Could the Jets go for an IDL at pick #7?

For a while there, it felt like the New York Jets selected a defensive tackle in the first round of just about every draft, and they kind of did in the 2010s when they made the following picks:

  • 2011: Muhammad Wilkerson
  • 2012: Quinton Coples
  • 2013: Sheldon Richardson
  • 2015: Leonard Williams
  • 2019: Quinnen Williams

All these years later, only Quinnen Williams is left, and defensive tackle was somewhat of a weakness last season despite all of this previous investment. Michigan defensive tackle Mason Graham has been a common preferred pick among Jets fans, and that preference is with good reason based on the below chart.

For this chart, being further right reflects a better run stop rate whereas being higher reflects a better pass rush win rate. As shown, New York Jets defensive lineman Quinnen Williams stands out in the top right corner as does Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Jalen Carter, who are two of the best defensive tackles in the NFL. Right behind them is Mason Graham, which seemingly bodes well for his success and gives reason to think that he can be among the best defensive tackles in the league.

If Graham isn’t available when the Jets pick, this chart would give reason to view Thor Griffith (Louisville) and Omar Normann-Lott (Tennessee) as good consolation picks in a later round.

What do you think? Would you give a Graham pick by the New York Jets as a yay or a nay?
