The Native American Guardians Association has come out to praise Donald Trump’s stance on changing the Washington Commanders back to the Washington Redskins. The Native American Guardians Association — NAGA — is a non-profit organization that advocates for increased education about Native Americans.
According to NAGA, the Washington Redskins moniker was never a “slur” but a symbol of “strength, honor, and pride” for the community, and as such, should become the name once again.
“When we spoke with the Native American Guardians Association this week … the org.’s vice president, Frank Black Cloud, told us POTUS’ comments ‘validate what Indian Country has been saying for years,'” reported TMZ.
“The old name, he said, ‘was never a slur, but a symbol of strength, honor, and pride for American Indian people. President Trump is standing with history, with truth, and with American Indian voices that have been silenced for far too long.'”
“The NAGA exec. went on to commend Trump for speaking on behalf of American Indians, adding, ‘This is not about nostalgia — it’s about justice.'”
The then-Washington Redskins announced that the logo and name would be retired in July 2020, which was at the height of the social injustice protests in the United States followed the murder of George Floyd.
After playing the 2020 and 2021 seasons as the Washington Football Team, the franchise officially announced the Commanders as their new name and logo on February 2, 2022.
“You want me to make a controversial statement? I wouldn’t have changed the name. It just doesn’t have the same — it doesn’t have the same ring to me,” Trump said earlier this month.
“But, you know, winning can make everything sound good. So if they win, all of a sudden the Commanders sounds good, but I wouldn’t have changed the name.”
Despite the renewed headlines regarding a reversion to the Redskins moniker, reports indicate that the franchise will not be doing so.
The Washington franchise is one of the oldest in the National Football League, having been established in 1932. The team has won three Super Bowl titles in its history, with those championship seasons happening in 1982, 1987, and 1991.
