Brendan Sorsby is launching an early attempt at landing in the NFL. The Texas Tech quarterback Sorsby leaves his school in controversial fashion amid his gambling issues. The Cleveland Browns immediately rose as one possible destination among fans and analysts.

But one prominent and longtime Browns insider doused that thought in cold water Monday evening.

Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com reports that the franchise is “unlikely” to bid on the embattled quarterback. Even fellow insider for WEWS Camryn Justice brought up a previous conversation made by incoming Browns head coach Todd Monken.

#Browns Todd Monken was asked two weeks ago about his thoughts on adding QB Brendan Sorsby via the supplemental draft. He opposed the idea.

“I don’t think we’re in a position to want to go down that road,” Monken said back on June 2. “That’s my opinion, that’s not [general manager Andrew Berry’s]. I like the quarterbacks that we have. I think that’s a slippery slope when you go down that, irrespective of talent, right?”

Monken, however, became blunt about Sorsby by saying he “put himself in that situation.”

The longtime offensive coordinator already has a polarizing quarterback room. DeShaun Watson remains despite having trouble finishing out a single season since his Cleveland arrival. Dillon Gabriel briefly took starting quarterback duties before fellow 2025 draft selection Shedeur Sanders grabbed the reins.

Surely there’ll be NFL teams taking a closer look at Sorsby in the supplemental draft. Cleveland’s longtime AFC North rival the Pittsburgh Steelers are hailed as one possibility. Yet each franchise likely will question Sorsby’s gambling addiction before deciding on taking him in.

Cleveland is called a fit by Ted Nguyen of The Athletic, handing him a fourth round value. But Sorsby’s chances of landing with the Browns look slim.
