February marked three years since the Washington NFL team changed its name to “Commanders”, but President Donald Trump believes they should have stuck with the controversial “Redskins” name and logo.

For decades, the “Washington Redskins” team name and logo caused controversy, since the term is considered a racial and offensive slur against Native Americans. The NFL franchise was initially called the “Boston Braves” in 1932 before they switched the name to “Redskins”.

The team moved to Washington in 1937, but founder/owner George Preston Marshall decided to retain the “Redskins” name. It wasn’t until 2020 that, following decades of calls to change the name and logo, then-team owner Dan Snyder announced they’d do so. Several of Washington’s team sponsors threatened to stop working with the club if they didn’t change the name.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Donald Trump was asked if the Washington Commanders should go back to their old team name. The 79-year-old said he wouldn’t have changed it, though he believes a long stretch of winning will help the “Commanders” team name sound better:

“Well, you want me to make a controversial statement? I would. I wouldn’t have changed the name. But that’s their — it just doesn’t have the same ring to me.” But, you know, winning can make everything sound good. So, if they’re winning, all of a sudden Commanders sounds good. But I wouldn’t have changed the name.”

Commanders controlling owner Josh Harris has been adamant about keeping the team name and logo as is. Regarding Donald Trump’s comments about “winning,” the team reached the NFC Championship Game last season and holds an ultra-bright future with Jayden Daniels leading the way.

Contrary to what Trump thinks, the bottom line is that the “Commanders” team name is here to stay.

Donald Trump Loves Sharing His NFL Opinions

Compared to his predecessors, President Donald Trump hasn’t been shy in giving his takes on the NFL product. In his first year as President, Trump called for the league to “fire” players who protest during the national anthem.

The President also criticised the NFL’s new kickoff rules introduced last year, and recently told reporters that he wouldn’t ban the Philadelphia Eagles’ “tush push” play.
