President Donald Trump appears to support the idea about the Washington Commanders going back to their old team name.
The Washington NFL franchise previously held the controversial “Redskins” team name from 1933 to 2019. After years of backlash and calls for the team to change them, it was finally scrapped in 2020.
For two seasons, the team went by “Washington Football Team” before settling on “Commanders in 2022.” Even though the old name was scrapped five years ago, some fans continue to call for the NFC East club to bring it back.
The Commanders are close to finalizing a deal for a new $3 billion stadium to be built on the current site of RFK Stadium in Washington. Since it’s on federal land, there’s speculation that Donald Trump would push for the Commanders to go back to the old name.
Trump was asked about this during a meeting with reporters on Wednesday:
“Washington, the Redskins perhaps that’s a little different but I can tell you I spoke to people of Indian heritage and they love that name and they love that team. And I think it’s a much superior name to what they have right now. And it had heritage behind it, it had something special.”
Former Commanders owner Dan Snyder refused to change the team name during his first 20 years at the helm. Several of the club’s sponsors pressured Snyder to change course, and the name was finally dropped in 2020.
President Donald Trump was asked if he would be involved in negotiations for the Washington Commanders to return to DC at the RFK Stadium site — and since it’s federal land, if he would require them to change the team name back to the Redskins.

The 78-year-old Donald Trump assumed office on Jan. 20, becoming just the second POTUS to serve two non-consecutive terms. Grover Cleveland previously accomplished this feat, serving in the White House from 1885 to 1889 and from 1893 to 1897.
Trump became the first sitting president to attend the Super Bowl when he watched the Philadelphia Eagles defeat the Kansas City Chiefs in New Orleans.
A year before launching his presidential campaign in 2015, Trump also tried to purchase the Buffalo Bills before they were sold to Terry and Kim Pegula. Though he lost out on the Bills’ ownership bid, Trump is widely popular among NFL owners such as Jerry Jones, Stan Kroenke, Robert Kraft, Shad Khan, Woody Johnson and Jimmy Haslam.
