Donald Trump has ramped up the pressure on the Washington Commanders in a bid to get the team to return to its old name.
The American President took to his Truth Social platform on Sunday to demand that the Commanders should revert immediately, claiming that there’s a “big clamoring” from fans and Native American groups looking to get the Redskins moniker restored.
“We are a Country of passion and common sense,” he wrote. “OWNERS, GET IT DONE!!!”
The Commanders were known as the Redskins until 2020, when they got rid of it following several years of criticism from indigenous communities and corporate sponsors.
They changed the name to the Washington Football Team before becoming the Commanders in 2022, something Trump would like to see reversed.
In another Truth Social post, he threatened to block a $3.7 billion stadium deal unless the team goes back to its old name.
The Commanders are keen on moving to the RFK site and are hoping for Trump’s support, but it appears that he’s not all that happy with them.
Team owner Josh Harris has already made it clear that there will be no name change, but it will be interesting to see how he responds to Trump’s threat.
