You’d think a billion-dollar deal between the NFL and ESPN would be a smooth transaction. Instead, it’s shaping up more like a blocked transaction, and the guy doing the blocking might just be sitting in the Oval Office.
The Worldwide Leader in Sports may have locked up a significant agreement with the NFL to acquire rights, including the beloved RedZone package. But don’t pop the champagne yet. There’s a very real possibility the entire thing could unravel, thanks to one man, President Donald Trump.
He loves football, sure. But he also loves to hold a grudge. And he’s had plenty with both the NFL and ESPN over the years. That’s what’s making folks inside the deal nervous.
According to Front Office Sports reporter Michael McCarthy, people close to the situation aren’t exactly sleeping easy. “What if Trump decides to stick his beak in?” one source told McCarthy. “This is a massive deal. It will require government oversight and approval. And we all know how Trump likes to poke the NFL from time to time.”
He doesn’t just poke. He slams. The president has taken shots at NFL teams over their names. He’s publicly ripped into ESPN. And let’s not forget, he once took Disney-owned ABC to court for defamation. This isn’t someone who lets things slide.
Now imagine this man overseeing a federal review of a media mega-deal involving his two longtime enemies.
Even if Trump doesn’t directly comment, he can make life miserable behind the scenes. Regulatory approvals, antitrust scrutiny, he’s got tools. And he knows how to use them.
And honestly? Some fans are hoping he does.
RedZone is sacred to NFL fans. Commercial-free. Non-stop action. When ESPN was announced as the new owner of the package, fans revolted. They don’t want corporate polish on something that already works.

Whether you agree or not, the truth is quite visible, if Trump wants to crush this deal, he can. He’s done it before. He can do it again. And if that happens, RedZone’s future, and ESPN’s massive bet, could be on the chopping block.
