The Green Bay Packers are the most historic franchise in the NFL. There is nothing more intimidating than the visitor’s entrance at Lambeau Field.

Players are forced to walk through a barren tunnel until they are met by 81,000+ Wisconsinites who are actively cheering for their demise.

To walk out onto the field at the oldest stadium in the NFL on a frigid winter night must be miserable. The lack of frills makes it that much more menacing for Packers opponents.

What is the history of Lambeau Field?

To understand Lambeau Field, you must first understand the Green Bay Packers. Founded in 1919 by Curly Lambeau and George Calhoun, they joined the NFL in 1921 as the oldest continuously operating team in the same location.

Even though Green Bay is the smallest market in the league by a large margin, the Packers carry one of the most prominent names in sports as a result of their early dominance under legendary coach Vince Lombardi. He led his team to five NFL titles in the 1960s, including the first two Super Bowls.

The Packers moved into what is now known as Lambeau Field on Sept. 19, 1957. Even though Soldier Field in Chicago is technically older, it was heavily rebuilt in 2002. Lambeau has been renovated but never rebuilt. It looks exactly the same today as it did more than 65 years ago.

Known as the “frozen tundra,” temperatures often hover at or below 0º during the late portion of the season and into the playoffs. Every single game is sold out.

The Green Bay Packers make opponents miserable.

Lambeau Field underwent three different renovations— from 2001-2003, 2012-2015 and 2023. The Green Bay Packers also updated their home locker room ahead of the 2025 NFL Season.

They did not touch the visitor’s locker room. It remains as barren and lifeless as it did in 1957.

That is on purpose!

Green Bay wants its opponents to be as miserable as possible. To provide them with additional comfort during pregame would take away the psychological advantage of Lambeau Field.

A recent video from sports photographer Sarah Snyder provides a point-of-view visual reference of the walk from the visitor’s locker room to the field. The walls are tight. Light is minimal. There is no color.

The entire tunnel is as minimalistic as possible on purpose.

If that walk was not already depressing, imagine what it must feel like on a cold day in December. Players must leave the comfort of a heated locker room to walk down an empty tunnel into the sub-freezing temperatures. That sounds awful— especially as they try to get their head right before kickoff!
