Bo Nix’s season is over in one of the most heartbreaking playoff developments ever. That is especially given that the quarterback seemed completely fine after firing the Denver Broncos to a win.

Nix and the Broncos advanced to the AFC Championship game with an overtime victory over the Buffalo Bills on Saturday night, but it came at a cost.

Broncos Head coach Sean Payton revealed shortly after the game that the QB had sustained an ankle fracture.

Nix is scheduled for surgery on Tuesday.

Payton said the injury occurred during the second-to-last play of the game, though Nix showed zero signs.

As a result, popular sports doctor Jeff Mueller has sought to explain.

Mueller has suggested that the fracture happened when Nix planted his foot to jump.

“His right ankle is forced into eversion, lots of compression,” he wrote. “Maybe a fracture of the talus, navicular or cuboid, like a crush injury?”

Meanwhile, Payton also revealed who will play in place of Bo Nix next Sunday, naming Jarrett Stidham as his starter for the AFC Championship Game.
