After the Kansas City Chiefs reached the Super Bowl for the fifth time in six years and third consecutive season, several NFL fans stated that they had seen enough. There was obvious Chiefs fatigue and it was made even worse by dubious calls that went in favor of Kansas City in the AFC Championship Game against the Buffalo Bills.

So, how did these fans plan to show their displeasure? Well, they stated that they were going to boycott Super Bowl LIX. Because the only way to let the NFL know that fans had seen enough (as if that matters) is to hit them where it hurts, the wallet. If ratings for the Super Bowl took a huge hit, then it would send a strong message to the league that fans will not sit idly by and allow Kansas City to continue to dominate (presumably with the help of the officials).

There’s just one major problem with that plan.

Nobody was ever going to boycott the Super Bowl. If you’re invested enough to be mad at bad calls, you’re a diehard football fan. What were you gonna do, go sit in your room while all your friends and family watch the Super Bowl? Come on now.

So, of course, when the preliminary viewership numbers came out, they told a much, much different story.

NEW NO. 1!

Fox Sports projects that a record-high 126 million people watched the big game on Sunday. They claim that the audience peaked at nearly 136 million in the second quarter (before things got ugly). Among those 126 million includes over 14 million people watching on streams, which is also a new record.

Not only did the boycott not work, it backfired in epic proportions. At this point, it’s clear that the NFL is far, far to big to fail. And if someone tells you that they’re done with the league, it’s usually just a big, fat lie.
