Like the rest of the NFL, the Pittsburgh Steelers are in the heat of the battle at training camp. Teams can carry 90 players on their roster, but that group is never completely set, especially with injuries, retirements, and salary cap concerns always at the forefront of NFL general managers’ minds.
Sometimes, teams carry players all offseason long, only to let them go before the season kicks off. Other times, players don’t even make it through training camp.
That’s what happened today, when the Steelers informed running back/wide receiver/kick returner Cordarrelle Patterson he had been released from the roster, despite it being his day off.
While there are certain instances when players ask for and receive their release from the team, that doesn’t appear to be the case here. Patterson was clearly not amused by the Steelers’ decision.

Patterson should have seen the writing on the wall when the Steelers selected running back Kaleb Johnson in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Yet, most of his success has come on special teams, where he’s become a four-time All-Pro.
Still, with Johnson offering added versatility as a skilled return man plus a key component of the rushing backfield, it only made sense to move on from Patterson sooner rather than later. At least now he’ll have a stronger opportunity to catch on with another team before camp breaks.
