The Pittsburgh Steelers have re-signed nose tackle Domenique Davis, the team announced on Tuesday, as part of a series of roster moves.
Davis, 29, had been with the Steelers throughout the offseason, but was released on July 25, when the team signed safety Chuck Clark.
The team re-signed Davis, in addition to adding running back Lew Nichols and tight end Kevin Foelsch, while releasing running back/kick returner Cordarrelle Patterson and waiving/injured outside linebacker Jeremiah Moon and wide receiver Montana Lemonious-Craig.
Davis first signed with the Steelers last November, spending a month on the practice squad after being released by the Cincinnati Bengals. He did not play a game for the Steelers last season, and was released on Dec. 6.
Davis re-signed in Cincinnati, closing out the 2024 season with the Bengals, but when he was a free agent this offseason, he picked Pittsburgh, citing his preference to play nose tackle in a 3-4 defense.
“It’s definitely built for me,” he said this spring. “I played under Tim Lewis before in the USFL. I already know it suits my talents better.”
A 6-foot-2, 326-pound native of Laurinburg, North Carolina, Davis played collegiately at Division II UNC-Pembroke.
He went undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft and was signed by the New York Jets, but was released with a failed physical designation later that summer. Two years later, Davis resurrected his career with the Houston Gambles of the USFL. He played in 1o games with the Gamblers in the spring of 2022, recording 24 tackles and four sacks.
Davis turned that USFL experience into a contract with the Bengals. He was released coming out of training camp, but was re-signed to the practice squad, and made his NFL debut, replacing an injured D.J. Reader as a call-up.
After playing two games in 2022, Davis re-signed with the Bengals for 2023, was again released after training camp and signed to the practice squad. He was promoted to the active roster last Dec. 22, after another injury to Reader, but did not play in any games.
He one again re-signed with Cincinnati for 2024, was released after training camp, and signed to the Bengals practice squad, but Cincinnati cut him from their practice squad on Oct. 22.
Davis will rejoin Yahya Black, Logan Lee, Esezi Otomewo and Jacob Slade in the the rotation for third-team defensive line reps at training camp.
