The Miami Dolphins are reportedly speaking to the Pittsburgh Steelers about a blockbuster trade involving Pro Bowl tight end Jonnu Smith.

According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Dolphins and Steelers have engaged in trade talks for the veteran tight end, who’s coming off a career year. Schefter reports that Smith is seeking a new deal as he heads into his contract year, something Miami apparently isn’t interested in:

“The Dolphins have had trade discussions with the Pittsburgh Steelers about their lone Pro-Bowl selection last season, tight end Jonnu Smith, per league sources. Those talks came after Smith expressed an interest in reworking his deal that is scheduled to pay him $4.8 million this season.

With Smith seeking a new contract, Miami has sought a trade partner. Last season, Smith set the franchise record for a tight end in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns. Smith’s preference, per sources, is to stay in Miami under a reworked deal.”

Smith signed a two-year deal with the Dolphins in free agency last offseason and signed a two-year deal worth $8.4 million. Smith earned his first Pro Bowl selection after catching 88 passes for 884 yards and eight touchdowns.

Before 2024, Jonnu Smith had never topped 50 catches or 582 yards in a season. He proved to be a tremendous fit in Mike McDaniel’s offense, so it’s surprising to hear that they’d rather trade Smith than extend him.

The other tight ends on Miami’s roster are Julian Hill, Tanner Conner and veteran Pharoah Brown. Hill and Conner combined for 15 receptions, 116 receiving yards and no touchdowns last season.

The Steelers have shaken up their offensive core significantly this offseason. They parted ways with running back Najee Harris and George Pickens and made a blockbuster trade for Seattle Seahawks superstar wide receiver D.K. Metcalf.

With Aaron Rodgers presumably about to sign his contract with the Steelers, could Jonnu Smith also join the party? Stay tuned.

Jonnu Smith & Pat Freiermuth Would Form A Scary TE Tandem In Pittsburgh

The Steelers already have a quality starting tight end in Pat Freiermuth. Now imagine if they added Jonnu Smith to the mix, giving Rodgers (or Mason Rudolph?) two big-bodied targets to complement Metcalf.

Smith has never played with an elite quarterback, so there’s no telling what kind of numbers he could put up with Aaron Rodgers throwing him the football.
