The Pittsburgh Steelers have reached out to the Jacksonville Jaguars about trading for quarterback Trevor Lawrence, according to reports. Lawrence was taken with the #1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and has largely failed to live up to the expectations that were placed on him coming out of Clemson.

Despite making the playoffs last season, the Pittsburgh Steelers were a clearly flawed team last season due to their lack of playmaking at the quarterback position, with both Justin Fields and Russell Wilson putting forth average to sub-par performances when installed as the team’s starting QB. Just to show you how diminished the “Pro Bowl” has become, by the way, Wilson was selected to participate in it this year.

Trevor Lawrence, meanwhile, had his worst season as a pro (not counting his rookie season under Urban Meyer, because that was a disaster at all levels), as he completed 60.6% of his passes for 2,045 yards, 11 touchdowns and 7 interceptions in 10 games. Lawrence also started in a career-low ten games due to injury.

“Steelers have made inquiries to the [Jaguars] about a trade for QB Trevor Lawerence. This directly from the horses mouth in the Jags organization. WOW!” Ryan Burr of the Big 10 Network posted on social media on Thursday, February 13.

When Lawrence was coming out of Clemson University, he was widely considered to be a can’t-miss QB prospect akin to the likes of Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck. That potential, however, has yet to fully materialize in the NFL.

Lawrence’s best season came in 2022, when he completed 66% of his passes for 4,113 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions en route to leading the Jags to a playoff berth and win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

With the Steelers clearly int he market for a quarterback that can get them over the hump from being a Wild Card team to a legit Super Bowl contender, there’s been speculation that the team could look into signing Aaron Rodgers, whom the Jets officially announced they were parting ways with on Thursday.
