The Pittsburgh Steelers hosted former Indianapolis Colts and San Francisco 49ers safety and All-Pro special teamer George Odum for a free agent visit on Tuesday, according to the NFL transactions page.
Odum, 31, was an All-Pro in both 2020, with the Colts, and 2022, with the 49ers, as a special teamer, and he could be a possibility to immediately replace injured Steelers special teams captain Miles Killebrew, who suffered a serious knee injury in Sunday’s win over the Cleveland Browns.
The 6-foot-1, 202-pound Odum joined the Colts as an undrafted free agent in 2018 and made the team out of training camp as a UDFA to play on special teams. He also made his first career start as a rookie, replacing an injured Malik Hooker.
Over four seasons in Indianapolis, he was always a big contributor on special teams, but had a variety of roles on defense, from playing just 25 snaps in 2020 to 471 in 2021 — his most prolific statistical season, with 55 tackles, one quarterback hit, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and two passes defended.
In 2022, he signed with the 49ers, taking over a mostly special teams-and-backup role. He played in 213 snaps of defense over three seasons with San Francisco, to go along with 755 snaps of special teams.
Odum suffered injuries that ended his 2023 and 2024 seasons prematurely, playing just 11 games in 2023 and 12 in 2024. After offseason elbow surgery, he was released by the 49ers on July 19.
