The Pittsburgh Steelers are adding a notable free agent signing to their running back corps.

While the team allowed Najee Harris to walk away in free agency, their room still includes Jaylen Warren, Kenneth Gainwell, and rookie Kaleb Johnson.

According to Jordan Schultz of FOX Sports, the Steelers are signing Trey Sermon to a one-year deal.

“The #Steelers are signing RB Trey Sermon to a 1-year deal,” Schultz reported on Monday. “Sermon spent the past two seasons with the #Colts, totaling 258 yards and 2 TDs last year.”

Trey Sermon Had His Best Game Against His New Team

Sermon was a third-round pick by the San Francisco 49ers in 2021. He didn’t get much of an opportunity with the Niners and was released before his second season, before the Philadelphia Eagles claimed him off waivers.

He played just two games in 2023, registering 19 rushing yards, and later joined the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad.

Sermon was promoted to the 53-man roster, serving as the third option on the depth chart before taking over backup duties behind Jonathan Taylor and playing all 17 games last season, starting three of them.

Sermon played 31 games for the Colts over two seasons. Ironically, his best performance came against Pittsburgh in an 88-yard outing.

He reportedly attended the Steelers’ rookie minicamp and has apparently done enough to earn himself a contract with the team, although he’s not a nailed-on cert for the 53-man roster.

A powerful runner, Trey Sermon figures as a sensible addition, although the Steelers are still thought to have missed out on adding speedy backs to their group.
