After an impressive 4-1 start to the 2025 NFL season, the Pittsburgh Steelers have now dropped two games in a row after a 35-25 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday Night Football.

But it’s what happened along the way that caught the eye of many longtime NFL fans who learned a new rule thanks to a bizarre mishap by the Steelers’ offense.

Pittsburgh Steelers Center Zach Frazier Avoids Penalty With Heads Up Play

Midway through the second quarter, the Steelers were facing a third-and-long situation and starting center Zach Frazier believed the team was running a no-huddle offense, as it had been previously.

As such, Frazier hurries to the line and places his hand on the ball to prepare to snap it after it had been spotted.

However, quarterback Aaron Rodgers was not in hurry-up mode. Instead, Rodgers calls everyone back into the huddle. But Frazier, knowing the rules, knew that if he had taken his hand off the ball, it would have been a penalty on the Steelers.

Had Frazier released the ball to join the huddle, it would have been called either a false start or illegal procedure. Rodgers also knew the rule. So the veteran quarterback told the play to the rest of the team, then relayed the protection to Frazier at the line.

Ultimately, the play was a success. Rodgers completed a pass to Jonnu Smith for 10 yards. Unfortunately, it was not enough for a first down and after a penalty, Pittsburgh kicker Chris Boswell drilled a 46-yard field goal to put his team up 9-7.

Had Frazier been penalized and the Steelers not picked up any yards, Boswell would have had to hit a 56-yard field goal. And while the multi-time Pro Bowler probably could have done so, Frazier’s quick thinking spared him from having to take a much tougher attempt.

Meanwhile, NFL fans learned a new rule that they’d likely never seen before.
