On Sunday, Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf pushed his way into the NFL discussion books thanks to his overreaction with a fan in the stands. Metcalf approached the spectator, grabbed hold of his blue wig, and took a swipe at him.
Metcalf was not immediately punished for his actions. No penalty. No ejection from the game, nothing.
Though it didn’t help that the referees didn’t see the incident, neither did Mike Tomlin.
However, now the NFL has chimed in, and it’s not good news for the Steelers’ playoff hopes.
On Monday, less than 24 hours after Metcalf’s incident occurred, the NFL has decided to suspend Metcalf for the final two games of Pittsburgh’s regular season. He will have the opportunity to appeal and provide his side of the story. Reports indicate Metcalf will be appealing.
“Metcalf’s actions violate league policy, which specifies that ‘players may not enter the stands or otherwise confront fans at any time on game day and … if a player makes unnecessary physical contact with a fan in any way that constitutes unsportsmanlike conduct or presents crowd-control issues and/or risk of injury, he will be held accountable,'” the league said in a statement.
No matter what, Metcalf will be eligible for the postseason, should the Steelers qualify.
